Can You Text Without Cell Service?

Yes. You can text without cell service using a Meshtastic radio paired to your phone, a GMRS radio that sends text between radios, a satellite messenger or a phone with satellite messaging, or a messaging app over Wi-Fi if the internet still works. Each one depends on different things, so a good family plan uses more than one.

What stops working when the cell network goes down?

Regular text messages (SMS) travel over your carrier's cell network. Apps like iMessage, WhatsApp and Signal travel over the internet, which your phone reaches through either cell data or Wi-Fi. When the cell network fails, SMS stops, and so does cell data. Whether the apps still work depends on whether you have another way onto the internet.

That's why the cause of the outage matters. A carrier outage, a damaged tower and a regional power failure each knock out different things, and the options below each survive a different set of failures.

Does Wi-Fi messaging still work?

If your home internet is up, yes. Wi-Fi calling and internet messaging apps keep working when only the cell network is down, which is what happened for many people during carrier-specific outages.

The catch is power. Home internet needs your modem and router running, and it needs your provider's equipment in the neighborhood to stay powered too. A small battery backup on the modem and router can keep you online through a short outage if the provider's network is still up. Over a longer, wider outage, plan on losing this option.

How does Meshtastic send texts with no network at all?

Meshtastic is an open-source system for small radios that send text messages directly to each other with no cell towers, internet or monthly plan. Every radio relays messages it hears, so a text can hop across several radios to reach someone out of direct range. No license is needed.

Our Walkie Textie pairs with your phone over Bluetooth, and you type in the free Meshtastic app on iPhone or Android. It averages about half a mile between two units, with height, terrain and buildings changing that, and more radios in the area means more paths for a message. If you'd rather not depend on a phone, the LILYGO T-Deck has its own screen and keyboard. Everyone you want to reach needs a Meshtastic radio of their own. Our explainer on what Meshtastic is covers the basics.

Can a GMRS radio send texts?

Some can. The BTECH GMRS PRO sends text messages between compatible radios, in addition to normal voice. That gives you a quiet option on the same radio your family already uses for voice calls. Transmitting on GMRS requires an FCC license, though one license with no exam covers your immediate family. Range follows the same rules as GMRS voice, so height, terrain and repeaters all matter.

What about satellite?

Satellite messaging works almost anywhere you can see open sky, with no local network involved. There are two main ways to get it.

Dedicated satellite messengers are small devices that send and receive texts and SOS alerts over satellite networks, usually with a subscription plan. Our breakdown of satellite messengers and what they cost to run compares the main options.

Many recent phones also have satellite features built in. Newer iPhones and some Android phones can send emergency messages over satellite when there's no cell or Wi-Fi coverage, and some can send regular texts too, depending on the phone, the software version and your carrier. Some carriers also offer satellite texting plans. Check what your own phone and plan support before you count on it. Satellite messages are slower than normal texting, and you need a clear view of the sky.

Which option should your family use?

Think of these as layers. Wi-Fi apps cost nothing extra and work during many carrier outages. Meshtastic and GMRS cover the family locally when nothing else is working. Satellite reaches beyond your area and gets help when local options are out of range. A PACE plan puts them in order so everyone knows what to try next.

Common questions

Do texts work when calls won't go through?

Often, yes. When the network is up but overloaded, a text needs far less capacity than a call, and your phone keeps retrying until it gets through. If the towers are down entirely, neither will work.

Can I text 911 without cell service?

Text-to-911, available in many areas, still uses the cell network. Without cell service, a phone with emergency satellite messaging or a satellite messenger with an SOS function is the way to reach emergency services by text.

Can a Meshtastic radio text a regular phone number?

Not directly. Meshtastic messages go to other Meshtastic radios. Plan on reaching only the people who have a radio on the same mesh.

Do I need a license to text with these?

Meshtastic needs no license. Texting on a GMRS radio requires a GMRS license. Satellite messengers and phones need no radio license, only a compatible device and plan.

If you want local texting that needs no license and no network, start with a pair of Walkie Textie radios.
