How Do You Set Up Meshtastic on Your Phone?

To set up Meshtastic on your phone, install the free Meshtastic app on iPhone or Android, charge your radio with its antenna attached, and pair the two over Bluetooth. Then set the radio's region to US, give it a name, set up a private channel for your group, and send a test message to a second radio to confirm everything works.

What do you need before you start?

You need a Meshtastic radio from our mesh radio collection or elsewhere, a phone with Bluetooth, and ideally a second radio so you can confirm a message actually goes across. Charge the radio fully and make sure its antenna is attached before you power it on. Turning on a Meshtastic radio without an antenna can damage it.

The app's screens change between versions, so the steps below describe what you're doing rather than exact button names. If you want a full walkthrough, the Meshtastic Starter Guide takes you from a sealed box to a confirmed message on the mesh.

How do you pair the radio with your phone?

  • Install the official Meshtastic app from the App Store or Google Play
  • Turn on Bluetooth and allow the app the permissions it asks for
  • Power on the radio and look for it in the app's list of nearby devices
  • Select it and enter the pairing PIN when prompted

Radios with a screen usually display the PIN during pairing. Radios without a screen use a default PIN from their documentation. Pair through the app rather than your phone's general Bluetooth settings. Once paired, the app shows the radio's status, battery and any other radios it can hear.

Why does the region setting matter?

A new radio typically won't transmit until you set its region, because legal frequencies and power limits differ by country. In the US, set the region to US, which puts the radio in the 902 to 928 MHz band. Every radio in your group needs the same region. This step is easy to miss, and it's the first thing to check if your radio connects to the app but nothing goes out.

While you're in the radio's settings, give it a long name and a short name. Pick something your family will recognize without broadcasting your last name or address to everyone on the mesh, since names are visible to anyone on the public channel.

How do you set up a channel?

Every radio starts on the same default public channel, which uses a key every radio already has. That's useful for testing and meeting nearby users, but anyone can read it. For your family, create a private channel in the app. Meshtastic generates a random key for it, and the app can show the channel as a QR code or share link.

Scan that code with each family member's phone to add the same channel to their radios. Do it in person when you can, and don't post the code anywhere public, since anyone with it can read your messages. The private channel protects what you write, but radio names and any shared positions are still visible to others on whatever channel they're broadcast on.

How do you send your first message?

With both radios paired to their phones and sharing a channel, open the channel in the app and send a short test message. The other phone should show it within a few seconds, and the sending app will show whether the message was acknowledged by another radio. Try a direct message to the other radio as well.

Start in the same room, then move apart. Walk to the end of the street, then try from a car or upstairs window. That quick test tells you more about your real range than any spec sheet. If messages stop going through, our guide on maximizing Meshtastic range covers what to change first.

Common questions

Why won't my radio show up in the app?

Check that the radio is powered on and charged, that Bluetooth and the app's permissions are enabled, and that the radio isn't already connected to another phone. Restarting both the radio and the app clears most pairing problems.

My radio pairs but messages never arrive. What's wrong?

Most often the region was never set, or the two radios are on different channels or settings. Confirm both radios are set to US and share the same channel, then test again from close range.

Do I need to update the firmware?

Not to send a first message, but keeping radios on current firmware brings fixes and privacy improvements. Update every radio in your group so they stay compatible, and follow the instructions for your specific radio.

Where can I learn the rest?

The Meshtastic Beginner Course covers setup, channels, privacy, range, troubleshooting, node roles and firmware in order, which is a good next step once your first message goes through.
