Do You Need a License for Meshtastic?
Share
Short answer: In the United States you don't need a license to use a Meshtastic radio on the 902 to 928 MHz band. That band is set aside for unlicensed, low-power devices, which is why you can buy a Meshtastic radio, pair it with your phone and start texting the same day.
Why Meshtastic doesn't need a license
Meshtastic radios in the US transmit at low power in the 902 to 928 MHz band, the same unlicensed band used by many wireless sensors and smart home devices. The FCC allows anyone to operate certified equipment there without a license, as long as it stays within the power limits. Off-the-shelf Meshtastic radios, including our Walkie Textie, ship set up for that band.
When does a license come in?
Meshtastic has an optional licensed operator mode for people who hold an amateur radio license. Turning it on lets a ham operator run under amateur rules, but it also turns off encryption, because amateur rules don't allow encrypted traffic. Most families never need that mode. If you don't have a ham license, leave it off.
How does that compare to GMRS and ham radio?
GMRS radios need an FCC license to transmit. The license covers your immediate family, costs a fee, and requires no test. Ham radio needs a license that does require passing an exam. Meshtastic needs neither, which is a big part of why it's the easiest way to get a family texting off grid. The trade is that Meshtastic sends short text messages, while GMRS and ham radios carry voice. For a side-by-side look, read Meshtastic vs GMRS.
Does it work in other countries?
Other regions use different frequencies. Europe uses 868 MHz, for example. The radios we sell are configured for the US. If you travel, check the rules for the country you're in and set the region in the Meshtastic app to match.
Common questions
Do I need a license to use the Walkie Textie?
No. It runs at 902 to 928 MHz at under 1 watt.
Is Meshtastic legal to use in the US?
Yes, on the US frequency band within the power limits that standard Meshtastic radios already follow.
