On! Meshtastic Device Build

On! Meshtastic Device Build

BLUF - This build consists of the following:

  1. An empty On! can
  2. A RAK19003 w/ RAK4631 installed (link)
  3. A lightweight 3.7v battery (with correct connector and reverse polarity) (link)
  4. One Bluetooth antenna and one 915MHz LoRa Antenna (link)
  5. Tools to drill the antenna port

NOTE: Items 2 and 4 can be obtained simultaneously by purchasing a Meshtastic Starter Kit (19003 Base Board - No Additional Modules) from RAK Wireless.

This project was serendipitous. We recently ordered 4 RAK19003s to test builds for our ultralight mesh node project. The overarching purpose of this build series is to create the lightest node possible so as to make lifting the node with a tethered weather balloon more viable (lighter device = smaller balloon and less helium = more affordable).

Although a lighter enclosure is in development at this time, we just happened to have some extra empty On! cans laying around, so naturally we had to try it out. We discovered that the interior space of the can was ample for our purposes.

Is this a build you could see yourself making? Let us know in the comments!
