Card of the Day Guide

The Card of the Day provides a robust security system to enhance discreet communication within your group. It includes a 10-letter heterogram for securely sharing numbers, unique code words for common terms across various categories, and designated phrases for authentication and emergencies.

Key Elements of the Card of the Day:

  1. 10-Letter Heterogram (for Numbers): This is a unique 10-letter word (a heterogram) generated by the user. Each of the ten unique letters in this word corresponds to a digit from 0 to 9, providing a secure way to refer to numbers.
  2. Code Words: These are specific, pre-arranged words that you will use to represent other words or phrases within designated Categories. This allows you to communicate common concepts discreetly. Add words under the following categories: Places, People, Objects, Directions, Conditions, and Other.
  3. Distress Phrase: This is a specific, pre-determined phrase that you can use to signal an urgent or emergency situation to your group.
  4. Passphrase: This is a unique phrase that you can use to authenticate your messages, letting the recipient know that the communication is genuinely from you.

Using the Card of the Day:

  1. Securely Share: Ensure every trusted member of your group has an exact copy of the current Card of the Day, displaying the same 10-letter heterogram, code words, passphrase, and distress phrase.
  2. Understand the 10-Letter Heterogram: Familiarize yourself with the 10-letter word and the mapping of its letters to the digits 0 through 9 (displayed on your sheet). To communicate a number, find the corresponding letters in your heterogram. For example, to share 1980 using "HYDROPLANE" (assuming H=0, Y=1, D=2, R=3, O=4, P=5, L=6, A=7, N=8, E=9), you would communicate "YENH" (phonetically "Yankee Echo November Hotel" if speaking).
  3. Understand the Code Words and Categories: Familiarize yourself with the code words assigned to the terms under each of the six categories: Places, People, Objects, Directions, Conditions, and Other. When you need to refer to a term listed, use its specific code word.
  4. Utilize the Distress Phrase: In an emergency, use the pre-arranged Distress Phrase.
  5. Authenticate with the Passphrase: Include the Passphrase in messages requiring identity confirmation. Alternatively, you can use an Authentication Table.

Key Things to Remember:

  • Randomize Regularly: Generate a new Card of the Day periodically or for each specific operation.
  • Secure Sharing: Only share the Card of the Day through secure channels.
  • Understand the Assignments: Ensure everyone knows the code words for the categories and the letter-to-number mapping for the heterogram.
  • Practice Encoding and Decoding: Practice using the system.
  • Keep it Confidential: Do not share your Card of the Day with anyone but your trusted group members.
  • Use the Distress Phrase Only in Emergencies: Ensure everyone understands its meaning.

By correctly understanding and using all the elements of the Card of the Day, you can significantly enhance the security and discretion of your communications.
